Abstract:

Objective To analyze the research status, hotspots and trends for the mental health of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Methods Literatures from January 1st, 2016 to March 26th, 2025 in CNKI and Web of Science core databases were retrieved. CiteSpace 6.4.R1 advanced version was used for bibliometric analysis in terms of publication trends, countries/authors/institutions collaboration networks, keywords and bursting words.

Results A total of 216 Chinese and 1 258 English articles were included. The annual publication volume increased in English articles by an average of 20.1% a year, and the United States, Netherlands and China were the countries with the most publication. However, Chinese publication volume decreased after 2023. The keywords formed nine and eight clusters in Chinese and English literatures, respectively, which were integrated into four core areas: mental health and comorbid disorders, neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders, education and social function, and research methods and intervention. Chinese researches focused on optimizing the family-social support system and intervention models, while English researches focused on the mechanism of neurodevelopmental comorbidities and evidence-based practice.

Conclusion The researches on the mental health of parents of children with ASD tend to interdisciplinary integration. There is a significant divergence in the main topics between Chinese and English researches.
