External Fixation of Trochanteric Fractures in High Risk Geriatric Patients in Local Anesthesia

Abstract: Objective To explore the management of trochanteric fracture in high risk geriatric patients. Methods Fifteen patients of trochanteric fracture were treated with external fixator using local anesthesia from June 2007 to May 2008, with an average age 82 years, all of which were complicated with various kinds of internal medical diseases.Results All paitents were recovered from fracture within 12 weeks, except for 2 cases died of internal medical diseases. Conclusion External fixator using local anesthesia in the management of trochanteric fractures in high risk geriatric patients is an ideal method with the advantages of less truma and less time as well as it reduces complications and mortality of trochanteric fracture in high risk geriatric patients.
